Dr Ed Barsley

Dr. Ed Barsley is an award-winning environmental designer, author, and adventurer whose work focuses on building a more resilient, sustainable future. Founder of The Environmental Design Studio (TEDS), Ed has over 20 years’ experience in climate adaptation and risk communication, helping communities and cities around the world prepare for the challenges of a changing climate.

He has spoken globally at major events including SXSW, Glastonbury Festival, and Fully Charged Live, combining deep technical knowledge with a passion for storytelling and innovation. Ed’s PhD from the University of Cambridge focused on climate resilient environments and the communication of risk. He is the author of the RIBA-published “Retrofitting for Flood Resilience” and the creator of major initiatives such as Hazard + Hope and the Climate Creatives Challenge, a global competition driving fresh thinking on climate communication. His award-winning designs include the Flood Resilient Garden at the 2024 RHS Chelsea Flower Show and have brought climate resilience to the global stage, with the project garnering a coverage reach of 2.8 billion people worldwide.

In 2022, Ed launched Climate Campers, converting a VW ID Buzz into ‘Flo’, a pioneering fully electric Climate Camper for low-carbon adventures. However, when his father sadly passed away, leaving behind an unfinished 1955 86” Land Rover Series 1 project, Ed decided to honour both his father’s passion for overland journeys and their shared environmental mission by transforming ‘Evie’ into a world-first: a fully electric, classic Series 1 Land Rover expedition vehicle.

Thus, The Electric Overland was born, a globe-spanning journey to demonstrate that with ingenuity, determination, and respect for our planet, even the oldest of vehicles can be re-imagined for a zero-emissions future. Ed’s mission is to inspire belief that “Electric Vehicles can go the distance”, promoting sustainable adventuring while celebrating heritage, innovation, and resilience. As he prepares to drive Evie across continents, Ed brings a rare blend of technical expertise, lived experience, and heartfelt storytelling to this landmark project. His journey promises not only to push the boundaries of electric vehicle capability but to spark global conversations around climate action, adaptation, and the art of what’s possible.

Pertinence & Purpose

We’re living at a pivotal moment. As the climate crisis accelerates, the need for bold, visible examples of sustainable innovation has never been greater. While electric vehicles are gaining traction, doubts still linger about their reliability, capability, and relevance beyond cities and smooth roads.

The Electric Overland directly challenges those perceptions, taking a fully electric classic Land Rover on a global expedition across extreme environments and remote regions. It’s a story that bridges past and future: honouring heritage while proving that zero-emission travel is not just possible, but powerful, resilient, and inspiring.

This expedition isn’t just about distance, it’s about impact. By engaging audiences emotionally and visually, it helps shift mindsets, spark conversation, and make the electric transition feel tangible, adventurous, and exciting. At a time when people are hungry for hope and action, The Electric Overland delivers both.

The Electric Overland is more than an adventure, it’s a statement: that with courage, creativity, and care for our planet, even the most iconic vehicles of the past can help drive a cleaner future.
