THE TEAM

The Electric Overland is made possible by a group of partners who share a belief in bold ideas, practical innovation and stories that move people. Together, they are helping bring Evie, a fully electric 1955 Series 1 Land Rover, from workshop to world stage, supporting the build, journey, storytelling and wider mission behind the expedition. Their involvement helps turn an ambitious expedition into a global platform for adventure, resilience and low-carbon possibility.

meet Ed_edited.png

Dr Ed Barsley is the creator and expedition lead behind The Electric Overland. He will be driving Evie, a fully electric 1955 Series 1 Land Rover, around the world as part of a landmark journey exploring adventure, resilience, heritage and the transition to cleaner energy.

An award-winning environmental designer, author, artist and climate resilience specialist, Ed is the founder of The Environmental Design Studio and has spent more than 20 years helping people, communities and organisations understand and respond to the challenges of a changing climate. His work combines technical expertise with storytelling, design and public engagement, making complex issues around risk, resilience and adaptation more tangible and hopeful.

Ed’s PhD from the University of Cambridge focused on climate-resilient environments and the communication of risk. He is the author of the RIBA-published book Retrofitting for Flood Resilience, and has spoken at major events including SXSW, Glastonbury Festival and Fully Charged Live. His projects include Hazard + Hope, the Climate Creatives Challenge, and the award-winning Flood Resilient Garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2024, which helped bring climate resilience to a global audience.

The Electric Overland began after Ed’s father sadly passed away, leaving behind an unfinished 1955 86” Land Rover Series 1 project. Rather than simply restoring the vehicle, Ed set out to honour his father’s love of overland travel by reimagining it for the electric age. The result is Evie: a classic Land Rover rebuilt as a fully electric expedition vehicle.

Through this journey, Ed aims to show that electric vehicles can go the distance, that heritage and innovation can work together, and that powerful climate stories can be told through adventure. As he prepares to drive Evie across continents, Ed brings together lived experience, environmental expertise and a deeply personal motivation to lead a world-first expedition with purpose.
